Appendix 1: Public Toilet Refurbishment Programme

Through the Public Toilet Refurbishment Programme, significant efforts have been made to enhance the facilities provided. This is not only in terms of improving the condition of the buildings and facilities, but also to provide additional facilities to make them more accessible.

The information below sets out the enhancements to the facilities as part of Phase 1 of the Programme. The same consideration will be given to future phases.

Daltons (on the lower promenade near the zip wire)

The refurbished public toilet facility enhances the current offering by:

·         Increasing the number of cubicles in the women’s facility from seven to 10, two of which are ambulant facilities

·         Introducing a family room in the women’s facility which includes a changing table and child toilet (and can also act as an additional cubicle when not in use by a family)

·         Introducing a Changing Places Toilet in the women’s facility to provide a toilet and changing space for those who cannot use standard accessible toilets

·         Introducing an ambulant cubicle in the men’s facility

·         Introducing a family room in the men’s facility which includes a changing table and child toilet (and can also act as a cubicle when not in use by a family)

·         Introducing a Changing Places Toilet in the men’s facility to provide a toilet and changing space for those who cannot use standard accessible toilets

Kings Esplanade (by Hove Lawns)

The refurbished public toilet facility enhances the current offering by:

·         Increasing the number of cubicles in the women’s facility from three to four, one of which is an ambulant facility

·         Introducing a family room in the women’s facility which includes a changing table and child toilet (and can also act as an additional cubicle when not in use by a family)

·         Introducing a family room in the men’s facility which includes a changing table and child toilet (and can also act as a cubicle when not in use by a family)

Saltdean Undercliff

The refurbished public toilet facility enhances the current offering by:

·         Increasing the number of cubicles in the women’s facility from three to seven, one of which is an ambulant cubicle

·         Introducing a family room in the women’s facility which includes a changing table and child toilet (and can also act as an additional cubicle when not in use by a family)

·         Increasing the number of cubicles in the men’s facility from two to three, one of which is an ambulant cubicle

·         Increasing the number of urinals from two to six

·         Introducing a family room in the men’s facility which includes a changing table and child toilet (and can also act as an additional cubicle when not in use by a family)

Station Road

Due to the limited footprint of this site, there has been little opportunity to make any drastic changes to the facilities. Nevertheless:

·         The number of cubicles in the women’s facility will increase from three to four

·         One of the cubicles in the women’s facility will have a changing table so a parent, carer or guardian can change a nappy in a private space, rather than in the communal area

·         One of the cubicles in the women’s facility will be an ambulant cubicle

·         One of the cubicles in the men’s facility will have a changing table so a parent, carer or guardian can change a nappy in a private space, rather than in the communal area

·         One of the cubicles in the men’s facility will be an ambulant cubicle

New facilities

The new family rooms mean a parent, carer or guardian can change a nappy in a private space, rather than in the communal areas of the toilet. It also provides them with more space to help a child use the toilet, which will be at a lower height. There is also a toilet for parent, carer or guardian to use.

All sites will have refurbished accessible toilets and ambulant cubicles will be in all locations. Ambulant cubicles are more accessible than a standard toilet as it has certain supports in place such as grab rails to support the user.

Changing Places Toilets are toilets with enough space for disabled people and their carers. They are for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities and their carers, as well as the many other disabled people who cannot use standard accessible toilets.
